Environmental science is a field that uses information from other related fields of study such as biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and social sciences in an attempt to understand the environment and ways of solving environmental issues. They study the environment, the effects of human interactions, and come up with methods on how to minimise the negative impact on our environment.
These areas include ecology and conservation, environmental chemistry, atmospheric science, earth science, environmental policy, and management. These areas cover various subtopics to do with the environment, ranging from the molecular level up to the global level.
There is another reason why biodiversity is important since it increases productivity and the stability of ecosystems. Every organism in the ecosystem, be it a microorganism or a reptile, has a purpose and function in the ecosystem. An increased ecosystem has importance in facets such as the purification of air and water, the pollination of crops and seeds, and the recycling of waste in a way that directly affects the quality of human life.
Climate change occurs due to human-induced factors such as the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It involves the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, excess deforestation, industries, and farming. These actions put out CO2, CH4, and N2O, which cause global warming and climate change.
Environmental degradation is caused by human beings through factors such as air, water, and soil pollution, the elimination of natural vegetation, over-utilisation of resources, the introduction of new species into habitats, and global warming. Such activities result in the loss of biological diversity, degrade the ecosystem, and have negative impacts on human health and well-being.
Renewable energy sources can be naturally replenished within a short span of time and include solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy, and biomass. They are crucial because they are a renewable source of energy that can replace fossil fuels, helps in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, decreases pollution levels, and also helps improve energy security through the availability of many forms of energy.
