The story is based on the theme of loneliness and the inability to be comfortable with others. The author desires a real friend and is presented with a diary as a companion. The lesson also portrays the narrator's cleverness and talkativeness and how cleverly she deals with her irritated teacher.
In this lesson, Anne talks about being alone and having no one to talk to though she is surrounded by family and around 30 persons whom she called her "friends". So, she decides to express her feelings in a diary. It is not very often that she writes in a diary but she is in desperate need of a true friend.
So, she decides to name her diary as "kitty" and unlike others, she is not going to fill it with facts. She starts off by writing about her background, so that it is easy to read for anyone who is going to read it in the future. She tells us about her family and childhood when they all shifted away, her early education. Having given a brief outline of her background, she reaches present times where she tells us about the result day. Everyone in class is tense about their result and boys are even laying bets.
Anne was very self-assured about herself and her friends. She got on well with all the teachers except her maths' professor, who was always annoyed with her because of her chatty nature. So, he started giving her punishments in the form of essays on strange topics like "Chatterbox" to which she reacted with full wit. She wrote essays which were witty and showed clearly that this was a characteristic which she had inherited from her mother and not much could be done to eliminate it. He kept on giving her essays till she wrote a satire. After that third and last assignment, Mr Keesing never picked her out for talking.
