Sociology is the systemic study of human societies and the behaviours of individuals within the societies in which they exist. It focuses on the way people communicate, how they organise in groups, and how they are influenced by the surrounding society and culture.

Sociology is a distinct branch that employs theories and research techniques to understand and explain social facts. It incorporates all areas of culture, socialisation, social ranking, social transformation, and collective conduct.

Sociology is in fact a science as well as a social science. Like all sciences, it adopts system approaches, analyses data, and develops theories and hypotheses in an objective manner. It is meant to be as impartial as possible and to obtain results that can be easily reproduced. Sociology, being a social science, necessarily looks into its subjects of study in their social and cultural settings, bearing in mind that social actions are preconditioned by social facts.

Sociology also aspires to explore and solve social issues and concerns. Sociologists pay attention to issues of inequity, poverty, criminal activities, and discrimination, among other social issues, in an effort to come up with useful information that can facilitate change for the better. Sociology offers knowledge about the world that can influence policy and legislation, social service delivery, and personal behaviour.

Sociologists investigate how people create and/or learn roles, norms, or attitudes that define them within society. They learn how society moulds us with regard to aspects like gender, race, and social class. Socialisation refers to the process whereby individuals acquire knowledge regarding social expectations and restraints within society.

Groups of people like the family, school, economy, and government control and regulate social interaction. There is an assessment of these institutions about how they operate, their capabilities, and their effects on society as well as its members.
